The present invention relates to the use of a furanone derivative of formula (I): <CHEM> wherein X is hydrogen, hydroxy, a C<5> to C1/4 alkyl group or a C<5> to C1/4 alkylene group; Y is hydrogen, hydroxy or a C<5> to C1/4 alkyl group; Z is hydrogen, a C<5> to C1/4 alkyl group or a C<5> to C1/4 hydroxyalkyl group; and the broken line represents the presence or absence of a second bond; or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt or metal complex thereof for the manufacture of a pharmaceutical composition for use in preventing or treating autoimmune diseases in a mammal.
