[Class 117] [Also in Groups VI and XXX] Apparatus for feeding articles in succession from a supply comprises a suction device for picking up and conveying the article and means for agitating the articles in the supply so as to facilitate their removal. In the apparatus shown, the articles are cigarettes and the supply container is an endless band 4 which delivers the cigarettes from a machine in which they are made, and heaps them against the side of the feed device consisting of a rotating fluted drum 5. Perforations connect the bottoms of the flutes 5 with the interior and place the flutes in communication with a suction chamber 7. A stop 13 mounted on a hinged arm is provided. A catch plate 17 receives cigarettes that are held against the outer surface of the drum and fall off when the suction area is passed. Straighteners in the form of thin plates 50 are mounted above the surface of the conveyer. The cigarettes are fed either directly or by an fluted roller 10 to a conveyer 12 as described in Specifications 446,077 and 446,221, [both in Group XIII]. In a modification shown in Fig. 3, the suction device 18 removes the articles from single file as from the conveyer 12. The agitating device in this case is a blast of air from a nozzle 20. Where it is desired to deliver the articles in groups as in the packeting of cigarettes, the flutes in the periphery of the drum are disposed in corresponding numerical groups. |
