PURPOSE:To form an image having gradation without deteriorating a resolution by a method wherein an electric potential to be applied between a plurality of control electrodes and a reference electrode in an aperture electrode body is controlled to have many values based on an image signal by using an electric potential applying means. CONSTITUTION:With the rotation of a brush roller 20 and a supply roller 23, toner 22 in a toner case 21 is frictionized by the brush to be positively electrified. The toner 22 is filliped by a brush spraping blade 24 to be supplied to below an open part of an aperture 6 of a reference electrode 3 of an aperture electrode body 1. On the other hand, by applying a negative voltage to control electrodes 4 corresponding to an image forming part from a control voltage drive circuit 8, the toner 22 is led outside through the aperture 6 and held on a substrate 10 by a back electrode 11 to form toner dots. In this case, a voltage to be applied to the control electrodes 4 is varied in, e.g. 256 values. In this manner, the speed and amount of the toner are changed, whereby a density per dot has 256 variations.
