PURPOSE: To obtain an interferometer capable of operating without instability of source characteristics or without other remarkable deterioration. CONSTITUTION: An improved sagnac interferometer has a wide band light source 100 including fluorescent light medium, which is pumped by the light from a pumping source with sufficient intensity to temporarily generate incoherent light by superfluorescence. For example, superfluorescent light medium has an optical fiber 130 pumped in a reverse direction. The optical signal input to the sensing loop 142 of the interferometer is amplified by a modulator, output from an interferometer loop 142 and amplified by the optical gain of a superfluorescent fiber operated as the source 1000 and an amplifier. This is selected so that a modulation frequency is substantially reduced in the depth of the modulation gain to avoid the gain modulation in the superfluorescent fiber 130. |
