Catalytic hydrogenation of 2,4-diamino-6-hydroxy-5-nitroso pyrimidine (DAHNP) in aq. soln. is carried out at a DAHNP concn. of 0.5-3 mole/l. and with addn. of a total of 0.8-1.5 mole base/mole DAHNP continuously during the entire reaction time. 2,4-Diamino-5-formylamino- 6-hydroxy pyrimidine (DAFHP) is produced by reacting an alkaline soln. of 2,4,5-triamino-6-hydroxypyrimidine (TAHP) with (a) 1-3.5 mole HCOOH and 0.8-1.5 mole mineral acids or (b) 2-5 mole HCOOH; or by reacting the soln. from (1) with HCOOH, opt. with addn. of mineral acid.
