PURPOSE:To provide a very thin uniform film excellent in water repellency, oil repellency, stainproofnees durability, transparency, etc., by forming a chemisorbed monomolecular film or a polymer film on the surface of a substrate which contains active hydrogen groups or to which active hydrogen groups are attached through an -Si- covalent bond. CONSTITUTION:The surface of a substrate which has active hydrogen groups such as hydroxyl groups 2 or imino groups or to which such groups are attached is reacted with a chemisorbent through dehydrochlorination. After the surface is washed with a nonaqueous solution, it is reacted with water to form a chemisorbed monomolecular film 3. This film 3 is a very thin transparent pinhole-free film of the nanometer order.
