The tobacco particles are separated from a mixt. of tobacco particles and a gas by a separator consisting of a hood (12) with an inner cylinder (20). The latter is closed at its upper end and open at its lower end. The inlet pipe (22) for the mixt. of gas and tobacco passes through the wall of the hood and runs tangentially into the inner cylinder. The upper end (16) of the hood is connected to a suction pump so that the gas flowing out of the inner cylinder is drawn upwards, whilst the tobacco particles flow downwards.
