The chair has a base (13) to which the lower ends of links (14) are attached. The links form part of a mechanism which enables the height of the seat panel (17) to be varied. The chair has a backrest (20) which is supported by a foot (32) which can slide in a guide fixed to the backrest. The projection of the foot beyond the lower end of its guide can be varied by means of a lever (36) which holds the foot in its required position and consequently supports the backrest at the required angle of inclination.
