An air conveyor (10) is provided comprising a plenum chamber (14) including a deck plate (12), a plurality of first apertures (16) in the deck plate (12) for directing air from the plenum chamber (14) to convey articles, and a plurality of protuberances (18) extending from the deck plate (12) for receiving bottoms of the articles. The protuberances (18) preferably protrude from the deck plate (12) far enough to support the articles above accumulated slide resistance increasing material. The air conveyor deck plates (12) preferably also includes a plurality of second apertures (54) for directing air from the plenum chamber (14) to aid in lifting the articles. <IMAGE>
