PURPOSE:To improve the coloring and the visual field angular characteristic of display by providing two phase plates whose lagging axes cross each other at a specified angle and two other phase plates whose lagging axes orthogonally cross each other between a pair of polarizing plates. CONSTITUTION:This device has a pair of substrates 4 and 7 where electrodes crossing each other and oriented films orientation-processed in a specified direction so as to cover the electrodes are respectively formed on opposed surfaces, and liquid crystal material 9 which is sealed between the oriented films, twistoriented with a range of 200 deg.-240 deg. from one substrate to the other substrate and which has the value of the product DELTAnd of refractive index anisotropy DELTAn and layer thickness (d) which is set within the range of 800-900nm. Then, it is provided with a pair of polarizing plates 10 and 11 which is arranged on the outside of the pair of substrates 4 and 7 so as to hold the pair of substrates 4 and 7 between them, a pair of 1st and 2nd phase plates 12 and 13 which are arranged between the pair of polarizing plates 10 and 11 and whose lagging axes cross each other at 25 deg.-45 deg., and two other phase plates (3rd and 4th phase plates) 14 and 15 which are arranged between the pair of polarizing plates 10 and 11 and whose lagging axes are made nearly orthogonal to each other. |
