In the removal of material by laser beam, the beam (7) is directed perpendicularly or at an angle on to the workpiece surface (22) and a reactive substance, pref. O2, is passed in metered quantities into the laser unit head and reacts at the point of focus of the beam on the workpiece. The beam is moved along closely adjacent lines until the required material is removed. ADVANTAGE - Clean surface with uniform depth of removal.
