PURPOSE:To suppress formation of by-products and obtain the subject compound useful as an intermediate, etc., for various imidazoline type surfactants in high quality by adding phosphoric acid in reacting a diamine with a fatty acid or its ester. CONSTITUTION:A diamine (e.g. aminoethylethanolamine) expressed by formula I (X is 2-4C alkylol) is reacted with a higher fatty acid expressed by formula II (R1 is 7-21C alkyl, alkenyl or hydroxyalkyl; R2 is H or lower alkyl) or its ester (e.g. lauric acid). In the process, phosphoric acid (e.g. orthophosphoric acid) in an amount of preferably about 0.01-5mol% based on the higher fatty acid or its ester is added to carry out the reaction. Thereby, the objective imidazoline compound expressed by formula III is obtained. The high-quality imidazoline compound with a low diamide content can efficiently be obtained by simple operation according to the above-mentioned method. The imidazoline compound expressed by formula III in itself is useful as a surfactant. |
