PURPOSE:To make it possible to use the subject cluster as a superconducting material, magnetic material, etc., by passing soot obtained by subjecting graphite electrodes to arc discharge under a specific atmosphere through a gel chromatography using a developing solvent. CONSTITUTION:An opening 2, inert gas inlet 3 and graphite electrodes 4 and 5 are arranged in a chamber 1 to provide an arc discharge apparatus. A helium gas is introduced from the opening 2 into the chamber 1 and positive and negative voltages are applied from direct current source 6 to the space between electrodes 4 and 5 to carry out arc discharge and soot is generated by vaporization of these electrodes. Then raise of the soot is prevented by a copper sheet 7 to provide a mixed deposit consisting of the soot and C96 carbon cluster in the lower part of discharge part. The extract obtained by extracting the deposit with benzene, etc., is fractionated and collected using a liquid gel chromatographical method to produce C96 carbon cluster. |
