Improved method enabling the production of rigid plates or panels which are decorated in relief on at least one of their surfaces, which method consists in producing the said decoration by localised deformation (compression). It is characterised in that the deformation operation is carried out using a press having a fixed heating block or platen (1), attached to the surface of which is a punch (4) which carries, in relief, the pattern or decoration to be produced, and a non-heating movable pressing platen (2) on which is positioned the panel or plate (5) to be treated, the patterns in relief being produced by: - the plate or panel (5) being pressed against the heating punch (4) with gradually increasing pressure; - the pressure and the heat treatment being maintained over a sufficient period of time (depending on the type of panel) to obtain stabilisation of the material in the compressed zones. <IMAGE>
