PURPOSE:To restrain a ground potential inside a coil by expanding a normal propagation region by means of a forcible quenching operation. CONSTITUTION:In conventional cases, a normal seed is generated and a normal conduction part is propagated form the generated part to three directions, i.e., a conductor direction, a layer direction and a turning direction. When a propagation speed is slow, a ground potential inside a coil becomes very high and there is a possibility that a dielectric breakdown is caused. At a quenching operation, the connection part 4A of conductors is quenched by the electric current of an eddy current loop generated in the connection part 4A of superconducting wires 3. Since many quenching regions are generated inside the coil in a scattered manner, an inductive potential and potentials on both ends of a resistance due to a quenching operation are offset in a plurality of parts and the ground potential of the coil can be reduced remarkably. As a result, it is possible to realize a superconducting electromagnet which can protect the coil sufficiently even when it is quenched and whose reliability is extremely high. |
