An ion exchanger comprising a composite having a degree of swelling in water of 2 to 7 ml/g of resin, said composite being prepared by holding a cross-linked gel, which comprises a hydrophilic natural macromolecule having a three-dimensional cross-linked network structure and has ion-exchange groups, in the pores of a porous particle of a hydrophilic cross-linked copolymer having pores with a diameter of 0.01 to less than 1 νm, a pore volume of 30 to 70 % of the resin volume and preferably a particle diameter of 5 to 500 νm; a process for the production thereof; and a process for separating biopolymers such as proteins by using the ion exchanger. This exchanger undergoes little volume change, serves to remedy the shortcomings of conventional cross-linked gels in passing various liquids, and has merits of being free from nonspecific adsorption and having high adsoprtion and desorption rates in the separation of biopolymers such as proteins.
|
