The housing for the portable satellite communication transceiver is shaped as a briefcase. The lid (11) and base (10) are connected by a full length hinge and also by a stay (12) carrying markings, so that the angle of slope of the lid can be accurately regulated. Incorporated on the surface of the lid is a planar aerial array (14) and housed in the base is the radio equipment (16, 18) and a section (13) with a compass. The markings on the stay correspond to an angle between 30 and 70 degrees, preferably between 40 and 60 degrees. Instead of the single stay, an alternative stay arrangement may be used. The radiation pattern of the aerial is specified. USE/ADVANTAGE - E.g. for transcontinental satellite communication between mobile or stationary units connected to respective telephone networks; ship or land freight navigation.
