A meter reading arrangement has an optical fibre transmission path (3) made up of a pair of optical fibers (31) connecting between a meter (1) to be read and a meter interface unit (51). Light is transmitted over one of the fibres to indicating means (12) on the meter (1) and reflected light is transmitted by the second fibre to a transducer (5) in the interface unit (51).
