Disclosed is an optical fiber free from a generation of a microbend during manufacturing, in which an impregnation of hydrogen and/or water to a clad is prevented. An optical fiber having an electrical conduction, a tolerance to heat and a mechanical strength, and a process for making same. The optical fiber includes a silica based glass optical fiber including a core (11) and a cladding (12), a thin carbon coating (14) formed upon the surface of the cladding, and an electrically conductive coating (15-17) formed upon the outer surface of the carbon coating. The carbon coating functions as a layer for preventing the impregnation of hydrogen and/or water to the optical fiber, and the conductive coating functions as heat tolerance, conductive, and mechanical support member. Preferably, the conductive coating can be materials having a good contact with the carbon coating, high conductivity, high heat tolerance, and high strength, and can be formed as thin as possible. The conductive coating can be formed by a plurality of different metal layers having different thickness. |
