The exterior rear view mirror is for vehicles. It has a mirror housing in which a mirror is fitted and which is held in an operating position on a mirror pedestal, on which it can swing forward or rearward where the holder fixed to the pedestal stretches into the mirror housing. The mirror housing in its operating position completely surrounds the pedestal, so that the pedestal side edge of the mirror housing rests without pressure against the vehicle body.
