A new mycobacterial pathogen, Mycobacterium genavense sp. nov., sequences for the 16S ribosomal RNA of the micro-organism and 16S ribosomal RNA gene sequence thereof, probes and primers specific for, capable of hybridising to, and useful in the amplification of, the 16S rRNA sequence of the micro-organism and the use of said probes and primers in the detection of M. genavense infections.
