The control system comprises a number of containers for storing articles to be distributed. A number of portable transaction monitoring units are each adapted to be operatively mounted on anyone of the containers to generate a digital data record of the inventory of articles in the container and afterwards of each article removed from it for distribution. The containers each have a lock permitting removal of articles from the container only while a portable transaction monitoring unit is operatively mounted on it. A central computing unit is included having a housing with compartments formed in it for receiving and storing the portable transaction monitoring units. A locked door controls access to the compartments.
