In a process for the electrolytic pickling of continuously moving electrically conducting material, it is intended to reduce the treatment times compared with purely chemical treatments or to shorten the length of the treatment plant and to combat the attack of corrosive ions on the electrode material in order to achieve longer service lives, in particular of the anode. The material to be treated is subjected at least to a cathodic treatment in a first tank (7) and only to an anodic treatment in an immediately subsequent tank (10). The electrical circuit between the electrodes (4), (6) of different polarity in the consecutive tanks is completed via the material (1) to be treated. In the novel device, at least one anode (4) is immersed in a first tank of the consecutive tanks, while all the electrodes (6) in the immediately subsequent tank are cathodically connected.
