2115163 9303136 PCTABS00019 A process is described for growth of thermophilic bacteria in essentially elemental-sulphur free medium at cell densities of 1 x 109 ml-1 and above. Growth is under steady state conditions with continuous introduction into the medium of an inert gas to remove hydrogen and/or hydrogen sulphide. The process can be carried out in a gas lift reactor.
