The sensor, e.g. a proximity detector, (4) is installed at one end of a tube (5) whose other end (15) is joined to a stationary screw coupling for longitudinal extension of the tube. A flexible conductor (24) runs through the tube (5) and insert (16) from the sensor (4) to an evaluation unit (29) in the space enclosed by a plate (17) with right-angle bedns, to which a holder (20) for the adjustment insert (16) is screwed (19). The tube (5) is immobilised against rotation while the sensor (4) is advanced or retracted along the axis of the tube by rotation of the insert (16) within its holder (20).
