A method of the type-specific detection of herpes simplex virus, which comprises the step of DNA amplification of a liquid mixture containing either a combination of a first DNA primer containing an at least 15b oligonucleotide part having a base sequence represented by formula (1a): CACGGGTATA AGGACATCCA with a second DNA primer containing an at least 15b oligonucleotide part having a base sequence represented by formula (2a): GGGTCCTCGT CCAGATCGCT or another combination of a first DNA primer containing an at least 15b oligonucleotide part having a base sequence represented by formula (1b): GCCTCTTTTC CCCCGGGGAG with a second DNA primer containing an at least 15b oligonucleotide part having a base sequence represented by formula (2b): GGGAAAAAAG CCGCGCCGGGG and a DNA polymerase and an aqueous specimen, and the step of DNA inspection of the resultant reaction solution. The method makes it possible to differentiate infections diseases caused by HSV type I and HSV type II accurately, rapidly and type-specifically.
