A bumper system for a motor vehicle comprises at least one collision damper (1) having a collision damper piston (3) and a cylinder (2) containing it, and a detector device (9) to detect the relative speed between the collision damper piston (3) and the cylinder (2). In addition there is a blocking mechanism (17) which blocks the relative movement between the collision damper piston (3) and the cylinder (2) immediately a predetermined threshold is exceeded by the relative speed, whereby the collision damper (1) is formed in such a way that, after the relative movement between the collision damper piston (3) and the cylinder (2) has been blocked, it can itself absorb distortion energy. Here, the threshold sets that relative speed up to which the collision energy can just still be absorbed by the movement of the collision damper piston (3).
