This invention relates to an external axial splint 1 whose central rod-shaped body 2 incorporates two rigid members 3, 4 which can be slidably coupled to each other in an axial direction. The said central body 2 includes at least one elastically deformable member 19 attached to one of the two rigid members 3 which comes into contact with the other of the said two rigid members 4 to provide a damping action between them. This provides a splint which allows three types of movement: compression, extension and mixed movement to apply different stimuli in the fracture zone. The central body may have a hinged quadrilateral structure to prevent jamming of the slides (Figs 2 & 3). <IMAGE>
