The scale used has several graduations with different scale period and associated sensors. The inverse scale (5-7) periods form a finite geometric series starting from that of the first scale (4) period. Alternatively, the inverse scale periods are stepped according to a geometric series. The staging of the scaling periods can be continuous or involve mutually phase shifted blocks of different lengths with equal scale periods. USE/ADVANTAGE - Absolute position measurement device produces incremental output signals from minimal number of tracks with high measurement accuracy over long measurement distances.
