Method and apparatus for simulated analog control of color video for LCD applications.

Disclosed is a method and apparatus for driving conventional 3-bit luminance digitally accessed LCD panels so as to provide a perceived greater number of colors than can be directly or digitally accessed. In one embodiment, spacial mixing is used to access adjacent pixels which, when viewed from a distance, appear to be a color average of the two pixels. In another preferred embodiment, temporal mixing is utilized such that each pixel is accessed two or more times so that the time-wise average luminance level is perceived by the observer. In a further preferred embodiment spacial and temporal mixing are used to provide a "real time" or "on the fly" embodiment which provides accurate 5-bit perceived color displays. In a further embodiment, the use of a dual port frame store allows video to be clocked in to the storage at a conventional video rate but the data can be clocked out at a much higher rate so that a greater amount of temporal mixing can be utilized to provide 6-bit perceived color. <IMAGE>
