PURPOSE: To provide a fixed steady rest apparatus having an integral gaging device for measuring the progress of a machining or grinding operation on a cylindrical workpiece, the integral gaging device being remote from a workpiece to minimize internal friction between gripper arms and cams therefor. CONSTITUTION: An operator main body 44 is mounted in a case 12 so as to be capable of moving back and forth. A pair of gripper arms are slidably mounted on the operator main body. The gripper arms 60, 62 are urged to grip a workpiece 88 by the action of a pair of rollers 78, 80 and two sets of fixed guide pins 90, 91, 92, 93 which are operated in engagement with camming contours 32, 34 contained on opposing inner surfaces of the case 12. A gaging device is mounted remotely from the workpiece to avoid interference with a workpiece. |
