PURPOSE:To make a plate-shaped polarizing element compact by providing a dividing part, a reflecting part and a modulating part at every unit. CONSTITUTION:The respective units 20 of the plate-shaped polarizing element convert first and second incident light P1 and P2 into first and second P polarizing light LP1 and LP2 and first and second converted P polarizing light LP1* and LP2* by incident side prisms 211-213, the outgoing side prisms 221-223, the first and second modulating parts 231 and 232, the first and second dividing parts 241 and 242 and the first and second reflecting parts 251 and 252 (total reflection mirror) so as to emit them. Third incidend light P3 and P4 are returned to a light source by first and second reflecting bodies 271 and 272. Thus, the largeness of incident light as against an advancing direction can be made small so that the plate-shaped polarizing element is made to be compact. It is to be desired that the modulating parts 231 and 232 are 1/4 wave length plates, the dividing parts 241 and 242 are polarizing separation actuating films and the reflecting parts 251 and 252 are pair of reflecting surfaces. |
