The present invention relates to a device for cutting a notch, along its length, in a shaft made of wood, plastic or other materials which can be cut, in particular the top end of a pencil, thereby enabling it to be identified. This device is fitted with a blade (15) and with means (10)(14) for holding this blade in position. The shavings are cleared away via a tunnel (25) formed in a curved and flared plane parallel with the body of the blade. This plane thus forms, together with the overhanging face (55), a ring (9) forming a safety barrier against the cutting edge, an orifice (5) having a cylindrical cross-section slightly larger than that of the shaft. The blade (15) has a rectangular-shaped body and a cutting edge (17) which is perpendicular to the axis of the orifice (5). The notching is obtained, after the length to be notched has been inserted, by the effort of withdrawing the shaft against the said blade which acts as a plane. <IMAGE>
