A method of digital transmission of speech in an asynchronous network, especially an ATM network which includes at least one switch (20) in which information cells are made up from digital trains supplied by terminals (10) for coding speech. The method according to the invention is noteworthy in that the silences in the speech are managed in the switch (20) in such a way that the cells constituted transport only useful information so as to reduce the load on the network.
