A device for position determination in the case of linear motors, especially in the case of x-y linear motors, with the aid of a sensor which is fitted to the motor rotor and converts the periodic structure of the grid intervals of the stator into a voltage change during the movement of the motor rotor. The actual number of basic periods of the grid intervals travelled can be determined from the voltage signal. An electronic circuit compares the number of basic periods travelled which are actually carried out with the number of current pulses for the linear motor and authorises a correction movement if the two do not correspond.
