A rotary pump 1 has a housing 3 and a rotor 11 rotatable about a central axis within the housing 3. The housing 3 includes an inner pump chamber 16 disposed coaxially with respect to the central axis and having a suction port 19 in the vicinity of the central axis, and an outer pump chamber 17 disposed coaxially with respect to the central axis, communicating with the inner pump chamber 16 by way of a transfer port 33, and having a discharge port 21 in a peripheral region of the outer pump chamber 17. Furthermore the rotor 11 includes a centrifugal impeller portion 23 within the inner pump chamber 16 for conducting fluid from the suction port to the transfer port by centrifugal action, and a regenerative turbine portion 24 within the outer pump chamber 17 for conducting fluid from the transfer port 33 to the discharge port 21 by regenerative turbine action. Such a rotary pump may be made to have a low net positive suction head (NPSH) requirement whilst having a high output pressure so that cavitation is avoided, and the pump is capable of operating efficiently and reliably in long term operation. <IMAGE> |
