The filter 1 is intended for very thorough purification of contaminated outside air entering the interior of a motor vehicle, the long service life of the filter amounting to approx. 50,000 km. It is a three-layer filter, in which the coarse filter or preliminary filter 4 is part of the so-called filter casing 2, and the main filter or fine filter 6, together with the adsorption filter 7, is positioned in the said casing 2 as a filter tablet which can be replaced at regular intervals. In order as far as possible to avoid steamed-up windows in the passenger compartment, an adjustable bypass valve 10 is also arranged at a suitable location downstream of the preliminary filter in the casing 2, so that a considerable flow of partially purified outside air can be used for ventilation in the passenger compartment. <IMAGE>
