The temp of the exhaust gas in the region of the reactor (4) is measured and the volume of the reactor through which gas flows is regulated dependent upon the exhaust gas temp.It is regulated by adjustment of the cross-section (5.6) of the gas inlet surface of the reactor proportionally to the actual exhaust gas volumes of the internal combustion engine,i.e. increased or reduced. Realising the inherent energy of the exhaust gas a thermic expansion of the gas within the reactor (4) is stopped. The surface regulating system (5, 6) comprises a disc (5) which is arranged pivotably in front of the reactor.
