[Also in Groups XXII and XXXVIII] Apparatus for maintaining horizontal the cross-beam 16 of e.g. a double column planing or milling machine or vertical lathe comprises contact feelers 29 of switches 28, carried by the cross-beam, co-operating with guide nuts 23 movable on unloaded spindles 24 to energize one of two servomotors 22 adjusting the position of the relavent end of the beam 16 through differential gears 21 acting on the main spindles 17. Primary adjustment of the vertical position of the cross-beam is effected via spindles 17 by a main motor 18 which is also energized when large deflections of a feeler 19 are produced. The guide nuts 23 are adjusted jointly by an auxiliary motor 26, or manually. The feeler gauges may alternatively be photo-cell devices. |
