A sewing machine is for large stationary workpieces such as quilted covers and incorporates at least two units, each of which consists of a sewing head and an associated feed dog box. Each unit shifts on a portal in the x-direction with the portal moving in the y-direction. For the purpose of altering the distance between the units, one of the units at a time can be uncoupled from a joint drive effecting the movement in the x-direction. It can be shifted freely and adjusted to the new distance before being coupled again. ADVANTAGE - The machine can be converted to a new sewing program quickly and accurately.
