To treat a fabric with a fluid, e.g., bleaching / dyeing / finishing, etc., the surplus fluid is removed at the entry by pressing the surface of the fabric against the treatment roller. A diffusion stretch is between the initial pressing action and the final pressing, where the material is moved to and from the roller surface. One or more intermediate press actions are pref. applied to the fabric surface between the initial pressing stage and the diffusion stretch, with a rapid and short press movement on the fabric against the roller. After the first pressing, the fabric has a moisture content of 100-300%, and 70-220% after the intermediate pressings to pass into the diffusion stretch. At the final press stage, the fluid content is reduced to 50-120%, and extracted fluid is returned to the entry zone. The time to diffuse the fluid through the fabric is constant, with different travel speeds to allow for different fabric lengths. ADVANTAGE - The active chemicals are controlled and applied to the material for the best effect, using a small fluid supply volume. When the fabric passes to the next treatment stage, it has a low residual moisture content.
