New compounds are represented by Formulas 1 and 2 where Formula 1 is: wherein each of R1, R2, R3, and R4 is independently H, hydroxyalkyl, -C(R6)2COOH or ammonium, amine, or alkali metal salts thereof; R5 is an alkylene group having at least one carbonyl group; and each R6 is independently selected from H, and alkyl groups of from 1 to 4 carbon atoms, straight or branched chain, preferably H, -CH3, or -C2H5, more preferably each R6 is H and Formula 2 is: wherein R1, R2, R3, R4, R5 and R6 are defined for Formula 1, preferably at least 3, most preferably 4 of R1, R2, R3, and R4 are independently-C(R6)2COOH or salts thereof; and each R7 is independently R5 or an alkylene group. The compounds are advantageously photo- and bio-degradable and are particularly useful as chelants especially in washing compositions and in gas conditioning.
