OPTICALLY ACTIVE ALCOHOL AND ITS PRODUCTION

PURPOSE:To obtain the subject new compound useful as a raw material for producing functional materials such as antiferroelectric liquid crystal compounds. CONSTITUTION:A compound, e.g. R-(+)-1,1,1-trifluoro-7-ethoxy-2-heptanol expressed by formula I [(m) is >=5; (n) is >=1; C* is asymmetric carbon atom]. The compound expressed by formula I is obtained by reacting a sulfonic acid ester expressed by formula II (W is OH-protecting group; Y is sulfonyl) with a Grignard reagent expressed by formula III, providing an ether compound expressed by formula IV and then eliminating the OH-protecting group (W) of the resultant compound.
