The present invention relates to methods of increasing the efficiency of foreign gene expression in cells. In particular, the present invention relates to the use of retroviral vector mediated gene transfer techniques and results in methods of increasing the viral titer and the amount of protein expressed. The method of the present invention and constructs used therein are suitable for use in human gene therapy, particularly for the treatment of AIDS.
