PURPOSE:To join an electrode section to a semiconductor section so that the semiconductor section can have the function of a light receiving or emitting element and the electrode section can monitor voltage variation caused by light quantity variation. CONSTITUTION:When this optical transmission-reception element is used as a light emitting element, electric currents are made to flow to two electrodes 3 and 4 and, when the element is used as a light receiving element, only the electrode 3 is used and the variation of the quantity of received light is monitored by detecting the terminal voltage of the electrode 3 by maintaining the other electrode 4 in a no-bias or nearly grounding bias state by driving the electrode 4 with a modulated signal outputted from a light emission driving source.
