PURPOSE:To provide liquid crystal display device which can displays light brightness. CONSTITUTION:This liquid crystal display device has (a) liquid crystal cells 100 and 101 where picture elements each consisting of a couple of electrodes 41 and 48 and liquid crystal 45 arranged between the couple of electrodes are arranged in plural rows and columns and (b) an optical means 80 where high- refractive-index parts 82 and low-refractive-index parts 81 are arranged contiguously in parallel so as to have a refractive index difference meeting the requirements of the total reflection of incident light while the high-refractive- index parts 82 correspond to the picture elements.
