PURPOSE:To obtain the titled compound useful as a ballast component for photographic couplers in high yield and purity, by reacting an alkoxybenznene compound with sulfur chloride in the presence of zinc, etc., to give a sulfide compound and further reducing the resultant sulfide compound. CONSTITUTION:A compound expressed by formula I (R1 is alkyl; R2 is H or alkyl; R3 is alkyl or alkoxy) is reacted with sulfur chloride (S2Cl2) in the presence of zinc or a bivalent zinc compound, e.g. ZnO or ZnCl2, to give a compound expressed by formula II (x is an integer >=2), which is further reduced to afford a 2-alkoxybenzenethiol based compound expressed by formula III. Preferably, the zinc is used in an amount of 0.001-1mol based on 1mol compound expressed by formula I, and more preferably within 0.005-0.1mol range. The reaction temperature is preferably 0-150 deg.C range, particularly preferably 40-80 deg.C range. |
