A method of transmitting documents via an electric signal transmission line from a transmitting station to a destination station is characterized in that the transmission station sends a label message with the document consisting of document content identification data in addition to the transmitter identification data. The destination station returns an acknowledgement message to the transmitter station which includes the destination identification data and the content identification data for the document received by the destination station. This invention may be used for the exchange of computerized documents.
