<p>An efficient process for producing a biodegradable polymer by using a microorganism which can produce a polymer at a high rate, has a high intracellular accumulation ratio and is safe and readily handleable; and a process for separating and purifying safely and efficiently a polyhydroxy organic acid ester accumulated in a microorganism. A process for producing a polyhydroxy organic acid ester, characterized by culturing a rhodobacter under an aerobic condition to produce a polymer comprising a polyhydroxy organic acid ester; and a process for separating and purifying a polyhydroxy organic acid ester accumulated in a microbial cell, characterized by comprising the step of adding a lytic enzyme to a cell suspension to dissolve cell walls, the step of separating and recovering polyhydroxy organic acid ester granules present in a cytoplasm, said granules being each coated with a granulosa and having a diameter of 0.1 νm or above, and the step of removing the granulosa by treating with a protease.</p> |
