PURPOSE:To improve the conversion of methane, selectivity of the objective compound and the catalytic life in the partial oxidation of methane with oxygen to produce ethane and ethylene by using a catalyst produced by combining an alkali metal, a group III a metal and a group Va metal. CONSTITUTION:Methane or a methane-containing natural gas is partially oxidized with oxygen or an oxygen-containing gas to produce ethane and ethylene. The conversion, selectivity and catalytic life of the above reaction can be improved by using a catalyst consisting of a combination of (A) an alkali metal, (B) a group III a metal of the periodic table, preferably Sc, Y or a lanthanide metal such as La, Ce and Sm, especially La or Ce and (C) a group Va metal of the periodic table, preferably V or Nb and carrying out the reaction at 600-1000 deg.C. The conversion, selectivity and catalytic life can be further improved by using the catalyst components A to C at atomic ratios A:B:C of 1:(0.3-10):(0.05-2.0), preferably. |
